The Hemicycle, European Parliament, Strasbourg - 12 December 2007 The signing of the Charter of Fundamental Rights is met with protest by a number of MEPs calling for a referendum on the "Lisbon Treaty". The Charter was annexed to the "Lisbon Treaty", which was signed by heads of state on 13.12.2007. The "Lisbon Treaty" establishes the EU Constitution, which was rejected by the French and the Dutch in the 2005 referendums. As Italian interior minister Giuliano Amato said last February at the London School of Economics: "The goood thing about not calling it a Constitution is that no one can ask for a referendum." This name change has led to five governments cancelling a promised referendum, while the French and Dutch governments have decided to ignore the will of their electorate. The treaty needs to be ratified by all 27 Member States' parliaments. Only Ireland's ratification will depend on a referendum. The other 26 states aim to ratify through parliament, where the majority of MPs have long sold their representation to the highest bidder. This is all leading to a totalitarian EU while Europeans live their lives in ease believing that their governments are working to keep them secure and prosperous. The future of Europe can be different. The single market (the 'four freedoms of movement') does not need a centralized EU government that plans the EU economy. Have your say on the Future of Europe. Go to http://x09.eu and sign for a referendum in your country. ................................. .................................
