On May 10, 1990, two women discovered the desecration of the Jewish cemetery in Carpentras, an ancient Roman town, in the department of Vaucluse, whose Jewish population has flourished there since the 13th century. Besides broken tombstones and anti-Semitic inscriptions, the coffin of Felix Germon, who had died a week before, that had not been covered over with dirt, was removed from the ground, and the body was taken out and placed face down on a neighboring tomb. A parasol pole was discovered next to him, leading some to speak of a "simulated impalement." At the time, Francois Mitterand was president, Pierre Joxe was minister of the interior and Laurent Fabius was prime minister. The Front National was gaining popularity and on May 9, Jean-Marie Le Pen had made an impressive appearance on the television show Hour of Truth. Many French political leaders went to Carpentras to visit the site: Joxe, Jack Lang, Jean-Claude Gaudin, Harlem Désir, Raymond Barre, Lionel Jospin, Philippe Maurois, George Marchais. Note: To the best of my knowledge all the above were either socialists or communists. Large demonstrations against racism and anti-Semitism were organized the following week. President Mitterand attended one of them in Paris. It was the first time a sitting French president attended a demonstration in France. The finger was pointed at the Front National. Its leader adopted a strategy of victimization, claiming that his party was the target of a plot. When the hypothesis of anti-Semitism was temporarily discarded, he organized a meeting at Carpentras in 1995, to demand reparations. The investigation into the cemetery desecration dragged on for several years and the rumors proliferated. Lies were told by mythomaniacs, arrests were made, headlines kept the flame of speculation alive, but there was nothing definitive until 1996 when Yannick Garnier turned himself in and confessed to being one of the perpetrators. He denounced his four accomplices and admitted that it was indeed an anti-Semitic act committed by neo-Nazis. The accomplices were arrested except for the ring-leader, a skinhead named Jean-Paul Gos, who was killed in an automobile accident. The trial ended in April 1997 with two men being sentenced to two years in prison, and two others to 20 months. Now it appears that it was all a manipulation by François Mitterand to discredit the Front National, just as it was gaining momentum. Here is what Yves Daoudal reports: In his book I Know Nothing But I Will Tell All, Yves Bertrand, director of the RG (similar to our FBI) under eight different prime ministers, writes that the desecration of Carpentras, in May 1990, was an "anti-FN manipulation" by François Mitterand. Exceptionally ignoble, but completely successful... You will recall that François Mitterand had participated (and it was a first for a French president) in the great demonstration in Paris where they had burned an effigy of Jean-Marie Le Pen impaled. The desecration had been "discovered" on May 10. The night before, Jean-Marie Le Pen had had great success on the television show Hour of Truth. The aim was to break the spirit of the Front National, and also to make the parliament pass the Gayssot Law, thus undermining any possible criticism of this freedom-killing law. Reminders: The Gayssot Law makes holocaust denial a crime. It has been used to silence those who would deny the holocaust, but its real purpose is to silence any criticism that can be construed as "racist", and its ramifications to other groups such as Muslims has contributed to the stifling of freedom of speech in the public sphere, in schools, in the media and in the workplace. This "chape de plomb" (lead cover) makes necessary criticism of the behaviors of ethnic groups impossible.
