We note that the conventional definitions of entropy do not provide a quantity, which is changing monotonously with time. As most quantum systems relax to a unique ground state, the final entropy is zero independently of which mixed state we start in. The result of our work is a quantity serving as a Lyapunov function or generalized entropy for a general dynamical system. This derives from the introduction of a natural scalar product on the density matrices. We also address the question of the meaning of time reversal for system undergoing irreversible time evolution. The concept of time reversal is generalized and under reasonable assumptions, a unique definition is found to emerge.
