The Life line to North-East States in India is the death line for the wild elephants in the reserve forest of Dooars, North Bengal. In last thirty four years, more than 39 elephants have been run over while crossing the railway tracks passing through the heart of the reserve forests of Dooars. The railway corridor amidst the reserve forest take a heavy toll on wild lives every year, as poor animals cross the track with tuskers topping the list The tracks pass through the Mahananda, Chapramari, Jaldapara sanctuaries and the Buxa Tiger Reserve in doars that inhabits a number of endangered wild life. It cuts across the elephant corridor that stretches from north Bangal and Sankosh in Assam to Mechi in Nepal. Protests from so many environmental groups have fallen into deaf ears with Railway’s policy to convert the meter gauge into broad gauge in 2001. And after intervention by Calcutta High court, acting on a PIL, Railways was ordered to maintain the low speed through this area to avoid accident on these tracks. But the death of elephants on this Corridor is going on. But this unwanted death of these prehistoric creatures could be stopped recurring if the existing track along the fringe of the forest could be followed. A better solution bypassing the forest and by directing the movement of goods train on these tracks may save life of many from untimely, unwanted deaths on ‘The Corridor of Death’. Moreover, a vivid variety of wild life and vegetation of this Himalayan terrain region is of eminence importance for bio-diversity of this area.
