Many of California's 18th century Spanish missions are in disrepair, and millions of dollars are needed to restore them. A bill sponsored by U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer could make matching funds available to spur private donations, but some say this would violate the separation of church and state. A new play on the remarkable life and career of California architect Julia Morgan marks its world premiere in Sacramento this month. Morgan overcame illness and sexism in the early 1900s to design more than 800 government buildings and homes throughout California; she designed the Hearst Castle.
