Just 9 days before the critical Pennsylvania primary, issues of faith and moral convictions took center stage for the candidates. They had the opportunity tonight to discuss how they might, as President, lead the cause for worldwide compassion.CBS News Correspondent Susan Roberts takes a look.It was a chance to put aside the bickering and to put forth solutions. But from the first question, it was clear Senator Barack Obama's comment about bitter small-town voters was still foremost on the minds of many.Clinton says, "The characterization of people in a way that really seemed to be elitist and out of touch is something we have to overcome."Obama defended himself in the 2nd half of Sunday night's Compassion Forum.Obama says, ''The scriptures talk about clinging to what's good...my words may have been clumsy. Before the forum, Obama was not as polite...hurling harsh words at his opponent, Senator Hillary Clinton. He accused her of manipulating his words, saying "She knows better, shame on her."Obama also was asked how Reverend Wright brought him closer to God. Wright's comments have been controversial, but Obama defended his pastor, adding he's never been his spiritual advisor.Obama says, ''Pastors are imperfect, the membership is imperfect, I am a sinner, I am imperfect."Beyond the politics, the candidates were pushed to move beyond their standard talking points with questions both deep..."Why would a loving god allow people to suffer?"and unusual.Do you believe God wants you to be president? I could be glib and say we'll find out!"Both said they don't presume to understand the mysteries of God. Both defended their views on abortion rights. And both said more needs to be done to ease worldwide suffering caused by poverty, hunger and aids.Susan Roberts, CBS News, Washington.
