OLED stands for Organic light-emitting diode. This new type of LED has an emissive layer that comprises a thin-film of organic compounds. Displays that use OLED can be made very thin because OLED does not require backlight to function. It also consumes much less energy than traditional LED displays. The drawback of OLED is its short life span. Typical OLED displays have lifetime of roughly 5,000 hours. However, new chemical components have been tested that may extend the lifespan of OLED to 20,000 hours.
