A Video of Tibet from Lhasa to Kathmandu, Nepal which shows us how Tibet looks today. Exploring Tibet gives us a glimpse of a area of the world which has long fascinated us. This educational video is ideal for home or the classroom. It is appropriate for all ages. Tibet has been known as the mysterious isolated Buddhist kingdom locked away in the Himalaya Mountains , on the roof of the world. Not until the mid 1980s was Tibet open to visitors. Exploring Tibet starts with the history of the Tibetan people, their early kings and how Buddhism came to Tibet. Cross the Yarling River by small boat to the ancient monastery of Samye where the 'Great Debate' was held between Indian and Chinese teachings of Buddhism. .A description is attempted to explain the difference in teachings. View how the Tibetan people live today in their villages and as nomads. Learn what they eat and how harvest their crops. Children are seen studying in a school and at a monastery. In Lhasa , the Potala dominates the skyline, as it sits on a hill overlooking the Holy City. The Potala was the seat of government for the Dali Lamas . The Dali Lama is considered the spiritual leader of the Tibetan people. The Potala today is a museum and monastery. Visit the the Jokhang Temple, the most revered religious structure in Tibet before visiting the monasteries of Sera and Drepung on the outskirts of Lhasa. Travel over the ' Friendship Road ' to Kathmandu , Nepal going over passes which are from 13,500 to 17,300 feet high. Pass through the Himalaya Mountans seeing the mightiest of all-- Mt. Everest at 29,029 feet. Stop in the towns of Gyantse and Shigatse. In Gyantse, see the fortress of Gyantse Dzong , the Pelkor Chode Monastery , and the magnificant tiered Gyantse Kumbun. In Shigatse, see the important Tashilhunpo Monastery --seat of the Panchen Lama. The Panchen Lama is second only to the Dali Lama in spiritual importance to the Tibetans. If you have wondered what Tibet looks like today, or just want to have a better understanding of the long history of the Tibetan people, this the video is for you.
