Timothy Kirkhope is the leader of the British Conservatives in the European Parliament. He is against the EU Reform Treaty and wants the UK to hold a referendum on the issue. Richard Corbett is also a member of the European Parliament. He is from the British Labour party and the party’s spokesman on Constitutional Affairs. He supports the Reform Treaty. Kirkhope argues that Tony Blair had promised a referendum on the EU Constitution and that Gordon Brown should honour that pledge. Corbett claims that the Constitution was then and the Treaty is now. And they are different. But on Friday, Gordon Brown vowed to veto the Treaty should Britain’s so-called red lines not be respected. These are exemptions from specific clauses within the Reform Treaty. In this edition of Agora, a look at how this Treaty is rekindling debate over Britain’s place within Europe and what could happen at the next EU summit in Lisbon later this week.
