A collection of ten old commercials. MAYPO (1956) - Hilarious, simple commercial of a dad trying to get his kid (who is called Marky Maypo, by the way) to eat his Maypo cereal. Great animation, fantastic voices, but how many spoons do they use for just one bowl of oatmeal? ANDERSEN SOUP (1956) - Features the narrator Robert "Pea Soup" Andersen and the two non-identical twins Happy and Pee Wee (Pee Wee is the large one). Funny commecial, but it's really a good thing they aren't in any hurry to make that soup. That machine is SLOW! Watch the cord around Andersen's ankles. Voiced by Bob and Ray. E-Z POP POPCORN (date is unknown) - Information about this ad is so confusing. Dates are given from 1949 to the 60s. Huh? One thing I am sure about is the bass singer in the ad is the one, the only, Thurl Ravenscroft. You know who that is, even if you think you don't. Tony The Tiger? How about this: "You're a mean one, Mr. Grinch." Ah! There you go! CHEVROLET (1962) - Wife gets overly excited about something, husband worries she might be pregnent. No, silly, she just wants a new 1963 Chevrolet! Love the animation and the fonts used in this one. JELL-O (1959) - They probably wouldn't get away with this commercial today, which is sad, really. It's one of my all time favorites. I love watching the baby try to eat Jell-o with chopsticks and having little success. The line about the spoon being invented for eating Jell-o makes me giggle. The narrator is Alan Swift. FOLGERS (c. 1960s) - Harvey has a rough life. His wife's coffee is "undrinkable" and "harsh". His fantasies are beginning to drift to the girls at the office that make better coffee on their hotplates. Fortunately for Harvey's wife (the nameless abused angel is played by Barbara Eden), her friend carries jars of Instant Folgers everywhere she goes. Harvey is so happy, he makes bad puns. A delightful commercial that, like the previous one, would never fly today. BAGGIES (date unknown) - Pretty standard commercial, including one of those clever tests cooked up by Madison Avenue shysters that people will simply believe and not try at home. I've included it here because I get a kick out of the incredibly loud noise of the food kept in Baggies. If you want your watermelon to roar like a clap of thunder, buy Baggies. KLEAR FLOOR WAX (date unknown) - Klear Wax will make your floors look just like your swimming pool! Does anyone else wish they were in that house, sliding on that floor in their socks? Whee! CREST (date unknown) - Ann is better at everything. EVERYTHING! She can hit a bullseye dead on. But, wait, when the two girls have their toothpaste showdown, Ann gets smoked. I'm a little confused. Are they in a house? Why are there two sinks? Or are they in a lab? If so, then why are they in bath robes? At any rate, boys, don't date Ann. She has 21 percent more cavities, and she's handy with a deadly weapon. HIT PARADE CIGARETTES (1950s) - Mixed feelings about this one, which is more than just a commercial for cigarettes, but also a commercial for Toni hair products AND the opening theme to "Your Hit Parade". The montage of images is great and really fun to watch. But, the lyrics. *Sigh* The lyrics are terrible. I don't know much about Hit Parade cigarettes. I do know that in the early days of TV, shows were often sponsored by companies and products. (Post cereals sponsored "The Andy Griffith Show", Winston cigarettes sponsored "The Flintstones", etc.) But, to name the product after the show? How hokey! How about some Lawrence Welk champange?
