Another favourite tango of mine is "Torna Piccina" by Italian composer C.A. Bixio, of "Parlami d'amore, Mariu" fame. The video is dedicated to Brigitte Helm (1906/08-1996), the legendary star of Fritz Lang's "Metropolis" and one of the most interesting and fascinating faces of European cinema in the 1920's and '30's. The music and von Geczy's arrangement with its dramatic twists and turns seemed to suit her very well... Brigitte Helm , after starring in a number of hugely succesful silent pictures , succesfully transitioned to sound ("Die singende Stadt" 1930 - opposite Jan Kiepura). A popular actress, she also starred in multilingual versions of her movies (with Jean Gabin and other leading French actors)... She retired from movies in 1936, married and eventually moved to Switzerland. She never considered a return to the movies and refused all interviews about her career... The clips in this video are mainly from "Alraune" (1928), L'atlantide/Die Herrin von Atlantis (1932) with one clip from "Metropolis".
