Stand-up comedy (Wikipedia.org)

Stand-up comedy is a style of comedy where the performer speaks directly to the audience, with the absence of the theatrical fourth wall. A person who performs stand-up comedy is known as a stand-up comic, stand-up comedian or more informally stand up. It is usually performed by a single comedian, with the aid of a hand-held microphone. The comedian usually recites a fast-paced succession of humorous stories, short jokes (called "bits"), and one-liners, which comprise what is typically called a monologue, routine or act. Some stand-up comedians use props, music or magic tricks to enhance their acts. Stand-up comedy is often performed in comedy clubs, bars, colleges and theaters. However, there is no real restriction on where the craft can be performed. Many smaller venues hold "open mic" events, where amateur comedians perform comedy before a live audience, offering a way for such performers to hone their craft and possibly break into the business. In North America, many comedy clubs feature the now-iconic brick wall as the backdrop for stand-up performances.

Many stand-up routines are similar to one-man shows, with the main difference being the expectations of the audience, who, in the case of stand-up, expect a relatively steady stream of "laughs". This in turn affects the aims of the performer, who is under great pressure to deliver those laughs. If the performer cannot coax laughs out of the crowd, sometimes the crowd will poke fun at the comedian, a practice known as heckling.

Stand-up comedy is difficult to master partly because the performer is at the mercy of the audience, which is an integral element of the act. An adept stand-up comedian must nimbly play off the mood and tastes of any particular audience, and adjust his or her routine accordingly. Stand-up is an art form that is openly devoted to getting laughs from an audience above all else(unlike theatrical comedy, which creates comedy within the structure of a play and with character and situation). The skills attributed to stand-up are diverse; it is often necessary for a stand-up comic to simultaneously assume the roles of a writer, editor, performer, promoter, producer and technician.

One hallmark of a master stand-up comedian is the ability to not only face down a "heckler", but win over and entertain the rest of the crowd with a witty retort. Many stand-up comedians work for years to develop 45 minutes of material, and usually perform their bits repeatedly, slowly perfecting them over time. Actor-comedian Will Ferrell has called stand-up comedy hard, lonely and vicious. http://www.signonsandiego.com/uniontrib/20050624/news_1c24ferrell.html

Stand Up (Trapt song) (Wikipedia.org)

"Stand Up" is the debut single for Trapt's second album Someone in Control. It received radio airplay on July 12, 2005, and receives regular play-time at the Air Canada Centre during the pre-game warm-up of the Toronto Maple Leafs hockey club.

"Stand Up" topped out at #17 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart and #4 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart.

Stand Up (Ludacris song) (Wikipedia.org)

"Stand Up" was a 2003 hit single for Ludacris featuring Shawnna taken from his fourth album Chicken-n-Beer. It was Ludacris' first #1 single. It was produced by Kanye West.

The chorus consists of three repetitions of Ludacris rapping "When I move you move!" and Shawnna responding "Just like that?". After three repetitions, Ludacris says "Hell yeah! Hey, DJ, bring that back!" Then Shawnna says "When I move you move!" and Ludacris says "Just like that?" and they trade parts of the chorus.

Kanye West has stated that he wrote the first two lines of Ludacris' first verse (How you ain't gon' fuck? Bitch, I'm me! I'm the goddamn reason you in VIP).

A remix version was also recorded, in which Ludacris' third verse was removed and replaced with a verse from Kanye West. The remix appeared on the Akademiks: JeaniusLevelMusikKanye West Vol. 2 mixtape.

It topped the Billboard Hot 100 for the week of December 6, 2003. Ludacris went on to be nominated for a Grammy in Best Rap Solo Performance.

A music video was made for the song, directed by Dave Meyers. Film critic Armond White called the video a "masterpiece" that "conveys the urge of life." The music video includes several moments of surreal imagery. In one notable scene, Ludacris meets a young groupie. She appears more than delighted with her new catch. Viewers may ascertain that she is from out of town and thus unaware of the threat posed by the giant chicken she is eating. She attempts to initiate a passionate kiss but the make-out session is interrupted when her butt starts growing like crazy. blank">http://www.nypress.com/16/44/film/film2.cfm

_Richard Cheese and Lounge Against the Machine covered the song as a Lounge style version on his 2004 album I'd Like a Virgin.

Ludacris also made a remix of the song for the Atlanta Falcons.

Stand Up! (song) (Wikipedia.org)

Stand Up! is a chant sung by football supporters. It uses the tune of the Village People and Pet Shop Boys song Go West.

An orchestral version adopted by FIFA as the official theme song of the 2006 FIFA World Cup performed by the Italian baritone Patrizio Buanne. The song is played to the end of all the matches.

Interestingly enough the same tune and the same name has been used throughout British football for years.

The lyrics are simple: "Stand up if you hate Man U " repeated over and over. The effect the chanter intends to have is to have all fellow supporters standing in unison with them.

There are also variations such as "Stand up - if you're going up" and "Stand up - if you're staying up", referring to the Promotion and relegation in English football, often by teams who are o be promoted to taunt opposition fans whose team has been condemned to relegation.
