The Early Middle Ages are of a period in the history of Europe following the fall of the Western Roman Empire spanning roughly the five centuries from AD 500 to 1000. Aspects of continuity with the earlier classical period are discussed in greater detail under the heading "Late Antiquity". The Early Middle Ages were followed by the High Middle Ages.
