Yesterday is a 2004 South African movie written and directed by Darrell Roodt.
It tells the story of a young mother, called Yesterday (played by Leleti Khumalo), who discovers she has AIDS. Her husband, a migrant mine laborer, who originally gave her the disease, rejects her. Her ambition becomes to live long enough to see her daughter, Beauty, go to school.
This film is the first commercial feature-length production in Zulu.
Yesterday (예스터데이) is a big-budget, futuristic drama set in 2020 about a mysterious set of kidnappings on the border between China and a unified Korea. A police detective shaken by the loss of his son is put in charge of the investigation, which ultimately leads him back twenty years into the past. A gritty, dark-edged sci-fi drama.
1990. A number of children suddenly disappear. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Defense selects an elite group of scientists for a top-secret mission. Then, 30 years later ... The year is 2020 on a reunified Korean Peninsula. A string of murders is committed against retired scientists. The Special Investigations (SI) unit staffed by a crack team from the former North and South Koreas and outfitted with the latest technology is brought in to investigate. The killer, however, far from being deterred, taunts them with a signature pendant at every murder scene. In an act of devilish boldness he even kidnaps the son of the investigation team's leader, Seok. Then, in a stakeout, Seok manages to shoot dead one of the murderer's underlings. Cloaked in the man's clothes, however, is Seok's son, now dead by the hand of his father ... Meanwhile, in the megapolis Intercity, the chief of police is kidnapped right in front of his heavy security detail and the culprit leaves another pendant at the scene. During the Vietnam conflict, a young American Hockey Player, Matthew, goes to college in Canada on a scholarship. There, he meets and falls in love with a beautiful young French-Canadian coed, Gabrielle. After a stupid stunt, Matthew loses his scholarship and is faced with having to return to America where he will become eligible for the draft. His grandfather, having served in the military, encourages him to do the right thing and to do his duty. At first, Matthew is conflicted, staying in Canada but soon realizing his inability to provide adequately for Gabrielle. He enlists in the army and goes to Viet Nam. While there, Matthew's heroism costs him greatly. Gabrielle is told thru a letter that Matthew has died in Viet Nam. She is pregnant with his child, something she never got to tell him. After the child is born, Gabrielle decides to travel to America and visit Matthew's mother and grandfather to show them their new grandchild. While she is there, Gabrielle discovers that Matthew is not dead, but has been Seville injured. Now confined to a wheelchair, with both legs gone, Matthew lied to her so that she would go on with her life, unburdened with him and his special needs. Set in the 60's. In a small provincial town four high school teenagers are facing the graduation, but all that is on their minds is how to woo the home crowd to a concert full of Beatles hits, played by their band. The film's title came from a Zulu naming custom.
During the audition process on the film, the director was asked to try one take in Zulu and one in English, in the hopes that two versions of the film could be created.
