"Why" is a song by Annie Lennox from her debut solo album Diva (1992). It was released as the album's first single in 1992 (see 1992 in music) and reached number five in the United Kingdom and number thirty-four on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.
Lennox performed a piano-only version of the song for an NBC telethon to support the victims of Hurricane Katrina.
In 2006, the song was featured in the Family Guy episode Barely Legal when Brian took Meg to a school dance.
"Why", by Carly Simon, was one of a string of film-inspired singles from a less successful period in her career (specifically in the US). Following her much publicized break-down on stage in 1980, it was recorded for the movie Soup For One in 1982. The movie flopped but the soundtrack was a success.
The song, like all of the soundtrack; was produced by Edwards & Rodgers of Chic fame. This was a move away from the usual guitar-based hits of Simon's past, and many saw it as an ill-fated attempt at disco as musical tastes changed in the 80's. However, the bittersweet reggae-tinged ballad became quite a huge hit in Europe, hitting #10 in the UK and Germany and staying on the British charts for 18 weeks. By contrast, the song stalled at a dismal No. 74 on the Billboard Hot 100.
The song is centered around the phrase "Why does your love, hurt so much?", and Simon sings perhaps, blank">http://www.arts.telegraph.co.uk/arts/main.jhtml?xml=/arts/2005/08/04/bmplay04.xml&sSheet=/arts/2005/08/06/ixartright.html one of her most heartfelt and yearning vocals to date on the track. However, despite this sad subject matter, the song also became well known for its catchy refrain "La di-da, di-da".
In 1989 the song re-surfaced on the _Ibiza "Hacienda" blank">http://www.htfr.com/more-info/?catno=MR217 scene, and cemented its status as a mellow classic. Known for its bass-line and funky drums it was then that the growing hip-hop scene in the USA began to pick it up, 7 years after the original release. The song re-entered the UK charts the same year, charting at #56.
After its initial failure in the US, surprisingly it became well-known enough, not through Simon, to be featured on Carly Simon's Greatest Hits collection. This is due to the popularity of the song as part of the Soup For One soundtrack, its European success and its sampling on many further songs.
This song should not be confused with the early 1960 _Frankie Avalon single of the same name.
Why is a single by British DJ and singer, Sonique. Released on CD in Germany on 30 May 2005, the track peaked at number 90.
"Why" is a popular hit song. It was recorded by Frankie Avalon in 1959, and went to number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 singles chart for the week between December 28, 1959 and January 3, 1960, making it the last number one single of the 1950s, and, at least unofficially, the first number one single of the 1960s. This was Avalon's second and last number-one hit. The song was written by Frankie's manager and record producer Robert "Bob" Marcucci and P. De Angelis.
Why? was the Finnish entry in the Eurovision Song Contest 2005, performed in English by Geir Rönning.
As Finland had not qualified for the final in their previous appearance, the song was performed in the semi-final. There, it was performed sixteenth (following Hungary's NOX with Forogj, világ! and preceding Macedonia's Martin Vučić with Make My Day). At the close of voting, it had received 50 points, placing 18th in the 25-strong field - thus missing a top-ten berth and final qualification by 8 places and forcing Finland to qualify from the semi-final at their next Contest appearance.
The song is a ballad, inspired by the Beslan school hostage crisis, with Rönning asking why people do what they do, and "why can't love be all that matters?" While the song garnered considerable praise for Rönning's vocal performance, the general belief among fans was that it was too pessimistic a subject to prove successful at the Contest.
It was succeeded as Finnish representative at the 2006 Contest by Lordi with Hard Rock Hallelujah.
"Why" is slated to be the third single released by American singer Lionel Richie from his studio album Coming Home (2006).
It was being considered as the second single, but "What You Are" (the label's initial choice) became the official selection. In UK "Why" why was released in December 2006 as a single
Why? is a single from the British synthpop trio the Bronski Beat and appeared on their 1984 album The Age of Consent.
The song, recorded at RPM Studios, NYC and mixed at Townhouse Studio, London, pursued an energetic musical formula, while the lyrics focused more centrally on anti-gay prejudice. The song opens with a questioning vocal by frontman and vocalist Jimmy Sommerville and the shattering of breaking glass. It was the trio's second Top 10 success in the UK, throughout Europe and in Australia and is today considered a popular gay anthem.
"Why?" was the debut single by British R&B group Mis-Teeq.
"Why?" was originally an R&B song with pop influences. The music video featured the group (featuring Zena McNally) walking through a warehouse. The R&B version was the planned first single; however, Matt "Jam" Lamont's garage remix proved to be more popular, resulting in that version being released as the lead single from "Lickin' on Both Sides". The vocals were sped up, and a garage beat was inserted along with a new hook and riff. The music video for this version involved the girls in the aftermath of a house party and singing in front of a large stone building. This version did also feature McNally.

"Why" is the lead single from Gabrielle's fifth studio album, Always . It was released on 17 September, 2007 as a digital download and one week later (24 September, 2007) on CD single. The single was first played on BBC Radio 2 by Ken Bruce and has since been added to the Radio 2 B-list. The single charted at number forty-two on the UK Singles Chart, her second consecutive single to miss the top forty.
"Why" was one of the final songs recorded for Always and was produced by The Boilerhouse Boys. The song was written around a sample of the Paul Weller song "Wild Wood", which reached number fourteen on the UK singles chart. Weller enjoyed Gabrielle's interpretation of the song so much, he recorded new vocals for the track following Gabrielle's recording of the original demo version of "Why" .
