Whiz Kids was a television series which lasted one season (18 episodes) and ired from 5 October 1983 to 2 June 1984 in the United States. The show was about the adventures of a group of teenagers who worked as amateur computer experts and detectives. The series was inspired by the movie WarGames.
The series starred Lew Farley (Max Gail) a newspaper reporter as the group's mentor. The cast also included Matthew Laborteaux as Richie Adler, Jeffery Jacquet as Jermey Saldino, Todd Porter as Hamilton Parker, Andrea Elson as Alice, and Melanie Gaffin as Cheryl Adler (Richie's little sister). Supporting cast members included Madelyn Cain as Irene Adler (Richie's Mother), A Martinez as Police Detective Lt. Quinn, and Linda Scruggs as Miss Vance (the kid's English teacher).
Richie Adler lived with his mother and sister - his divorced father worked in the Middle East as a telecommunications consultant to several firms located there. It was revealed in the episode "A Chip off the Old Block" that most of the computer equipment in Richie's room was sent to him by his father and in one episode "Airwave Anarchy", a programmable robot called Herman. Richie collected these pieces of equipment from his father and connected them together to form "RALF" - his pet name for his computer system which included, in the pilot episode "Programmed for Murder", a camera which produced a primitive facial identification system when hooked into RALF's system.
The show was based on Richie and his friends coming across mysteries which they (mainly Richie) would attempt to solve using his computer skills with RALF's power. Guidance was provided by Farley (their mentor).
The series aired on CBS. Initially, it aired Wednesday nights, but it began airing Saturday nights on 7 January 1984, replacing Cutter to Houston.
Richie, Ham, Jeremy and Alice are teenagers living outside Los Angeles. They are also computer hackers who worked as amateur detectives in their spare time. Llewellen Farley is a reporter who is a source for the kids and sometimes asks them for help on stories he is writing. Farley's brother-in-law is Lieutenant Quinn who also provides the kids with help. Written by J.E. McKillop
