War is any large scale, violent conflict. War grows from the almost universal tribal warfare that has occurred throughout history, to wars between city states, nations, or empires. By extension, the word is now used for any struggle, as in the war on drugs or the war on terror. It was once thought man was the only animal who fought wars, but closer observation of animal life has discovered wars between ant colonies and chimpanzee tribes. A group of combatants and their support is called an army on land, a navy at sea, and air force at air. Wars may be prosecuted simultaneously in one or more different theatres. Within each theater, there may be one or more consecutive military campaigns. A military campaign includes not only fighting but also intelligence, troop movements, supplies, propaganda, and other components. Continuous conflict is traditionally called a battle, although this terminology is not always applied to conflicts involving aircraft, missiles or bombs alone, in the absence of ground troops or naval forces. A civil war is the use of force to resolve internal differences.

In War Before Civilization, Lawrence H. Keeley, a professor at the University of Illinois, calculates that approximately 90-95% of known societies engaged in at least occasional warfare, and many fought constantly. A war may begin following an official declaration of war but undeclared wars are common.

==Factors leading Any general theory of war must explain not only war but also peace. It must explain not only the wars fought in almost every generation in almost every country in the world, but also the rare instances of extended peace, including the Pax Romana, the one hundred years of peace on the North American continent during the 20th Ceemoved from the homeland.)

Motivations for war may be different for those ordering the war than for those undertaking the war. For a state to prosecute a war it must have the support of its leadership, its military forces, and the population. For example, in the [[Third Punic War, Rome's leaders may have wished to make war with Carthage for the purpose of eliminating a resurgent rival, while the individual soldiers may have been motivated by a wish to end the practice of child sacrifice. Since many people are involved, a war may acquire a life of its own -- from the confluences of many different motivations.

In Why Nations Go to War, by Darian Domer, the author points out that both sides will claim that morality justifies their fight. He also states that the rationale for beginning a war depends on an overly optimistic assessment of the outcome of hostilities (casualties and costs), and on [[Fundamental_attribution_error">mis-perceptions of the enemy's intentions

War (Edwin Starr song) (Wikipedia.org)

"War" is a soul song written by Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong for the Motown label in 1969. Whitfield produced the song, a blatant anti-Vietnam War protest, with The Temptations as the original vocalists. After Motown began receiving repeated requests to release "War" as a single, Whitfield re-recorded the song with Edwin Starr as the vocalist, deciding to withhold the Temptations' version so as not to alienate their more conservative fans. Starr's version of "War" was a number-one hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1970, and is not only the most successful and well-known record of his career, but is also one of the most popular protest songs ever recorded. Its power was reasserted when Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band took their rendition into the Top 10 in 1986.

War (Bob Marley song) (Wikipedia.org)

"War" is a song recorded and made popular by Bob Marley. The lyrics are derived from a speech made by Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie I before the United Nations General Assembly in 1963. The song is credited to Alan Cole and late Wailers percussionist Carlton 'Carly' Barrett as song writers, and not to Bob Marley. It first appeared on the Wailers' 1976 album, Rastaman Vibration. Barrett's brother and collaborator, former Wailer musician Aston 'Family Man' Barrett has since brought law suits against the Marley estate for unpaid royalties and credit for songs such as 'War' that were either written by others and not by Bob Marley, or in collaboration with Marley. One such suit resulted in a $500,000 settlement in 1994. A later suit filed in the UK was dismissed.

Marley, along with fellow Rastafarians, worship Selassie as the reincarnate of God, and refer to him as “The Lion,” which Marley does in many of his songs. Haile Selassie I gave the speech calling for world peace at the 1963 U.N. Conference in New York City. The song uses part of Selassie’s speech that calls for equality among all without regard to race, class, or nationality in his hymnal cry for peace. It also asserts, quoting Selassie directly, that until the day of an equal society, there will be war. In the original speech, Selassie urged U.N. officials and country representatives to disarm nuclear weapons, and to end international exploitation (specifically with Africa). The song honors Haile Selassie I while calling for action against racial inequality and international injustice.

Here is the part of Haile Selassie’s speech that appears in “War:” In his speech to the U.N., Selassie reminded his listeners that these are only words; their value depends wholly on our will to observe and honour them and give them content and meaning.

The War (song) (Wikipedia.org)

"The War" is a song by the from New Power Generation, headed by Prince (his alias at that time being an unpronounceable symbol) from 1998. The song was initially given away to customers who pre-ordered Prince's Crystal Ball album and experienced delivery troubles. The song is not from any album. It was also available as a music download on blank">Prince's website.

The song is a 26-minute live jam using distorted guitars and synthesizers. Prince encourages the audience to chant throughout "The evolution will be colorized", which makes reference to _Gil Scott-Heron's poem/song "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised". The lyrics are sermon-like, warning against harmful technology and the forecoming of the Apocalypse.

War? (song) (Wikipedia.org)

"War?" is a song from System of a Down's eponymous debut album. A live version of the song is also a B-side featured on the Sugar EP.

The song lyrics, "Who victored over, the Seljuks. When the Holy Land was taken. We will fight the heathens", as with many of their songs, refers specifically to Armenian conflicts with Seljuk Turks.

This song can be generalized to mankind fighting wars for wealth and other material gains throughout the centuries while coming up with great reasons for it; one of the first reasons given for such wars was that God commanded the war. As this reason changed to fighting communism and eventually terrorism, the war was still being fought for material gain and global domination. There is also a strong reminiscing present about The Crusades in the lyrics.

In the pamphlet of the band's self-titled album, before the lyrics, are notes apparently from the band stating that "We first fought the heathens in the name of religion, then Communism, and now in the name of drugs and terrorism", and that "our excuses for world domination always change."

The music video for War? features the band playing a live show. Unlike other music videos, this one is not dubbed over with the studio release. Rather, it uses the audio that the band recorded for their third demo tape. In the beginning of this video, tapes apparently showing events in the Vietnam War are played while Serj says "Freedom will only be available through death!" three times. The first time, he says it as a whisper, then, he says it louder, and screams the words for the third time. The video then cuts to Daron playing the guitar intro, while Serj shouts, "Praise the lord and pass the ammunition! God wants you to go to war!" The entire band then breaks into the song.

The song is changed a great deal when played live. The song features a Middle Eastern Intro, backing vocals, keyboards, synths, and new lyrics. This new version was first performed at the band's show in Glasgow.

The song was used in the PlayStation game, Apocalypse.

The War (Angels & Airwaves song) (Wikipedia.org)

"The War" was the fourth single released from Angels & Airwaves debut album, We Don't Need to Whisper. It was the third single for both the US and UK, but was the fourth single released, since "Do It for Me Now" was the second single for the US and "It Hurts" was the second single for the UK. Tom DeLonge has described this song as anti-war, with specific references to the Iraq War.

War (Swedish band) (Wikipedia.org)

War was a Swedish black metal supergroup, formed by Tony "IT" Särkkä of Abruptum, David "Blackmoon" Parland of Dark Funeral and Peter Tägtgren of Hypocrisy.

War was formed in 1995 when Blackmoon attended an Abruptum recording session in Peter Tägtgren’s The Abyss Studios. After the recordings, IT, Blackmoon and Tägtgren had a discussion about the scene, about the murder of Euronymous and IT's True Satanist Horde. They discussed to record an album and give any money they would earn to the True Satanist Horde. It was also discussed to have killed Varg Vikernes who had murdered Euronymous. As IT said: "We knew people inside the "Cunts" prison, who would have him killed for a certain amount of money, at that moment we hatched the idea of recording an album and that any money earned from it would directly go to the Hordes bank account. This is how WAR was born."

According to Blackmoon, "We decided loaded out of our minds, to form a band that night...a band that should be like a true fist to the face to all the theatrical, keyboards, female vocals, troll singing black metal bands that were coming out at the time". Unlike those bands, War played primitive black metal with lyrics mostly about Satan and war, but also recorded the racist song "I Am Elite" with lyrics such as "Stand aside for the superior race. You are nothing but worms" and "Niggers and kikes, stay away".

In 1997 the band released its first EP "Total War", featuring IT and Blackmoon on guitars, Peter Tägtgren on drums, Mikael Hedlund of Hypocrisy on bass and Jim "All" Berger of Abruptum, Ophthalamia and Vondur on vocals, on Necropolis Records. They also featured on the Bathory tribute album In Conspiracy With Satan released in 1998, performing the final song titled War. In 1999 they released their album "We Are War" with All on vocals, Blackmoon on guitars, David "Impious" Larsson of In Aeternum on bass and Lars Szöke, one more Hypocrisy member, on drums and guitars. IT had left the black metal scene in the meantime.

The band had to change its name to Total War as there was already another band called War and was put on hold in 2001, but released "We Are...Total War", a compilation of material released before.
