Walter Frederick "Fritz" Mondale (born January 5, 1928) is an American politician and member of the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party (largely established by former Vice President Hubert Humphrey). He was the forty-second Vice President of the United States (1977–1981) under President Jimmy Carter. He was also a two-term United States Senator from Minnesota and the Democratic Party nominee for president in 1984 against the incumbent, Republican Ronald Reagan. Reagan was re-elected in a landslide victory in which Mondale carried only his home state of Minnesota and the District of Columbia, winning 40.6% of the popular vote. Later, during the administration of Democratic President Bill Clinton he served as the United States Ambassador to Japan from 1993-1996.
