Wake Up (Hilary Duff song) (Wikipedia.org)

"Wake Up" is a pop song co-written by Hilary Duff, Joel Madden and Benji Madden, and co-produced by the Maddens for Duff's fourth album, Most Wanted (2005). It was released as the album's first single in 2005 (see 2005 in music).

Wake Up (The Living End song) (Wikipedia.org)

"Wake Up" is the second single from The Living End's fourth album, State of Emergency. It was released on February 18, 2006 in Australia. The song was both popular on Australian and New Zealand radio stations. It also peaked at 5 in the Australian ARIA Singles Chart. The song was also used on the 40 Hour Famine DVD for 2006.

Note that the lyrics and the fact that they use children singing in the song bears a striking resemblance to "Another Brick in the Wall Pt 2" by Pink Floyd off the album The Wall

Wake Up was featured on the Triple J Hottest 100 for 2006, reaching #53. This kept safe the Living End's record of featuring in every Hottest 100 countdown since 1997. However, there was no song by The Living End in the Hottest 100 for 2007, although their cover of the Cold Chisel song "Rising Sun" was in the list of songs that listeners could vote for.

Wake Up was released in the UK as a download single on July 30 2007.

Wake Up (Rage Against the Machine song) (Wikipedia.org)

"Wake Up" is a song performed by the rock band Rage Against the Machine. It is the seventh track from their self-titled debut album.

The lyrics discuss racism within the American government and the counter-intelligence programs of the FBI; a spoken portion of the song is taken from an actual FBI memo in which J. Edgar Hoover suggests targets for the suppression of the black nationalist movement. The song also makes references to prominent black figures targeted by the government such as Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr., and goes as far as saying that the government arranged their assassinations.

The closing lines to the song are:

"How long, not long because what you reap is what you sow"

These lyrics refer to a speech made by Martin Luther King Jr. called How Long, Not Long at the end of the Selma to Montgomery March on the steps of the State Capitol Building in Montgomery, Alabama. The final lines in that speech read "How long? Not long, because "you shall reap what you sow."

The opening riffs of the song are somewhat reminiscent of the opening chords of the Led Zeppelin song "Kashmir". A shorter version of the song is memorably featured at the end of the 1999 film The Matrix, a nod to both the band's name (the main antagonists of the movie are sentient machines) as well the name of the song (in the movie, humans are kept dormant so that they can be used to produce energy for the machines). The song is notable in that it features multiple musical parts, in an almost suite-like manner, and runs over 6 minutes. Its structure is very similar in this way to that of "Freedom," another track from the album, and it is a formula Rage would use many times throughout their career. There is also heavy use of quiet-to-loud dynamics, which was common in music during the early nineties.

Since their early live performances Zack has frequently used the final breakdown in the song to make statement about political & social issues, much in the same way as the album recording. At the 2007 Coachella Festival De la Rocha made a speech during the song, citing a statement by Noam Chomsky regarding the Nuremburg trials, blank">Tom Morello interviews Noam Chomsky, _ZMag. Accessed June 21, 2007. as follows:

The event led to a media furor. A clip of Zack's speech found its way to the Fox News program "Hannity & Colmes". An on-screen headline read, "Rock group 'Rage Against the Machine' says Bush admin should be shot." Ann Coulter (a guest on the show) quipped, "They’re losers, their fans are losers, and there's a lot of violence coming from the left wing."

On July 28 at their performance at the Rock the Bells festival in NYC, they made another speech during Wake Up just as they had done at Coachella. During this, De La Rocha made another statement, defending the band from Fox News, who he alleged misquoted his speech at Coachella:

At the Voodoo Music Festival, during the performance of "Wake Up," De La Rocha gave a rousing speech about his experience in the 9th Ward of post-katrina New Orleans. De La Rocha stated that the United States is fighting two wars: one in Iraq and one "against the people of New Orleans," before breaking into screams of "Wake Up!" at the end of the song.

Wake Up (Make a Move) (Wikipedia.org)

"Wake Up (Make a Move)" is the third single from Start Something, the second album by the Welsh Alternative metal band Lostprophets. This single was under much debate up to its release; both Lostprophets and their N Prime management wanted the dark, brooding "Make A Move" as a single, whereas the label wanted the poppier, catchier "I Don't Know". The band and their management walked away victorious and the song was released as a single with the modified title "Wake Up (Make A Move)". However, "I Don't Know" was later released for radio airplay in the US.

The group rarely plays the song in their live sets anymore since its initial release and have not publicly stated any particular reason for this. This is unusual, as they still play album tracks from Start Something which are less well known, such as "To Hell We Ride" and "We Still Kill The Old Way."

A music video was produced for the song and saw moderate airplay upon release.

Wake Up (Eskimo Joe song) (Wikipedia.org)

Wake Up is the first single by Eskimo Joe, lifted off their debut album Girl. The video for the song won 'Best Video' at the 2001 ARIA Awards.

The music video for the song features people with cardboard cut-out faces. This was later re-used in Kisschasy's music video for "Opinions Won't Keep You Warm At Night".

Wake Up (Three Days Grace song) (Wikipedia.org)

"Wake Up" was the fourth and final single off of Canadian alternative rock band Three Days Grace's debut album. The song was released as a radio-only single in Canada, where the line "you're not drunk enough to fuck" was changed to "you're just not drunk enough to talk" to avoid censoring the lyric out.

There is no video for this song though.
