"Treehouse of Horror V" is the sixth episode of The Simpsons ' sixth season, and premiered on October 30, 1994 on Fox. It is the fifth episode in the Treehouse of Horror series and features three short stories called The Shinning, Time and Punishment, and Nightmare Cafeteria. It was written by Greg Daniels, Dan McGrath, David Cohen and Bob Kushell, and directed by Jim Reardon.
In The Shinning, the family become caretakers at Mr. Burns's mansion where Homer goes insane due to the lack of television and beer, and tries to kill the rest of the family before finding a television and returning to normal. In Time and Punishment, Homer repeatedly travels back in time and changes events in the future as a result, after attempting to change things back to normal he eventually settles for a reality close to his own. In Nightmare Cafeteria, the school's detention halls are becoming overcrowded so Principal Skinner decides to use detention students as cafeteria food. Eventually Bart and Lisa are the only students left and just before they are slaughtered Bart wakes to find it was all a dream.
David Mirkin deliberately placed more graphic violence in this episode due to complaints about the violence in the show. The episode features guest star James Earl Jones as the voice of an alternate universe Maggie. It also features a recurring joke where Groundskeeper Willie is stabbed in the back with an axe. It was the first Treehouse of Horror episode not to feature wraparounds before each story. It is generally considered one of the best episodes in the Treehouse of Horror series and of the sixth season.
