Tom Steele (15 November 1905 - 28 May 1979) was a Scottish Labour politician.
Steele worked as a station master and served on the board of the Lanark Co-operative Society.
Steele was elected as Member of Parliament for the constituency of Lanark in 1945, defeating Alec Douglas-Home, and served as Parliamentary Secretary at the Ministry of National Insurance.
He lost this seat to the Conservative Party in 1950 but was re-elected for Dunbartonshire West from 1951 to 1970, when he retired. His successor in this seat was Ian Campbell.
At elections his campaign sometimes used the slogan Vote Steele For Strength.
Tom Steele (12 June 1909-30 October 1990) was a stunt man and actor, best remembered for appearing in serials, especially those produced by Republic Pictures, in both capacities.
Was in the Republic serial Masked Marvel, The (1943), playing the lead. He doubled three other characters and played a bit part as a heavy. Because of an error, he never received any billing.
Stuntmen are often selected because of their resemblance to the star they are doubling for. In contrast to this, many of Republic Pictures' western stars in the 1940s and early 1950s, such as Allan Lane (I), Bill Elliot (III), Rex Allen and Monte Hale, were selected in part due to their resemblance to Steele, who would do their stunts.
Doubled for Roy Rogers (I), Rod Cameron, Clayton Moore and George Montgomery (I).
He doubled for James Arness in Thing from Another World, The (1951), playing the creature when it was set on fire.
His trick for keeping his hat on in fight scenes (so the audience couldn't tell it wasn't the star) was to put rubber surgical tubing in the sweatband to make it fit tight.
Worked in the steel mills and played polo competitively in his younger days prior to becoming a stuntman.
