Thillu Mullu is a 1981 Tamil movie starring Rajinikanth, 'Thengai' Srinivasan, Madhavi, Kamal Haasan, Nagesh, Sowkar Janaki and music composed by M. S. Viswanathan. The film is directed by noted filmmaker, K. Balachander. The film became a blockbuster upon release and is in the top 10 Tamil movies made of all time. It's a remake of Bollywood hit, Golmaal.
Rajnikanth at first was hesitant in playing the role as Chandran because the role was light and comical as well as the comedy oriented storyline. At that time Rajnikanth was known more as an action hero and he was doubtful of his fans and public reaction to this. However, after being assured by his director/mentor K.Balachander that he should not let the public label or stereotype him as an action hero, he was convinced enough to take up this movie and role. It turned out to be one of the biggest hits of the year and brought him fame and accolodates from the public and critics.
Ayyampettai Arivudainambi Kaliyaperumal Chandran is a hip graduate who gets a job through his family doctor. The employer, Sri Ramachandramurthy has some frivolous notions about character, moustache, patriotism, thrift, recreation, etc. Chandran changes himself as a Nehru-jacket wearing, boring person, with no interests other than studies. His plan goes for a toss when he lies about his (dead) mother's accident to watch a hockey match. Unknown to him, his boss finds him having a fiesta in the stadium. To avoid losing his job, he creates a fictional wild and westernized twin Ayyampettai Arivudainambi Kaliyaperumal Indran by removing his moustache on the advice of his actor friend Nagesh and becomes the music teacher for his equally wild daughter. Confusion and complications ensue when he has to recruit a small-time actress as his mother, and a kid who knows the proceedings starts blackmailing him. Written by manojar
