The Three Musketeers (Wikipedia.org)

The Three Musketeers (Les Trois Mousquetaires) is a novel by Alexandre Dumas, père. It recounts the adventures of a young man named d'Artagnan after he leaves home to become a musketeer. D'Artagnan is not one of the musketeers of the title; those are his friends Athos, Porthos, and Aramis -- inseparable friends who live by the motto, "One for all, and all for one".

The story of D'Artagnan is continued in Twenty Years After and The Vicomte de Bragelonne. Those three novels by Dumas are together known as the D'Artagnan Romances.

The Three Musketeers was first published in serial form in the magazine Le Siècle between March and July 1844. Dumas claimed it was based on manuscripts he had discovered in the Bibliothèque Nationale. It was later proven that Dumas had based his work on the book Mémoires de Monsieur D'Artagnan, capitaine lieutenant de la première compagnie des Mousquetaires du Roi (Memoirs of Mister D'Artagnan, Lieutenant Captain of the first company of the King's Musketeers) by Gatien de Courtilz de Sandras (Cologne, 1700). The book was borrowed from the Marseille public library, and the card-index remains to this day; Dumas kept the book when he went back to Paris.

Dumas' version of the story covers the adventures of D'Artagnan and his friends from 1625 to 1628, as they are involved in intrigues involving the weak King Louis XIII of France, his powerful and cunning advisor Cardinal Richelieu, the beautiful Queen Anne of Austria, her English lover, George Villiers, 1st Duke of Buckingham, and the Siege of La Rochelle. Adding to the intrigue are the mysterious Milady de Winter, and Richelieu's right-hand man, the Comte de Rochefort.

The Three Musketeers (1921 film) (Wikipedia.org)

The Three Musketeers, produced in 1921, is a silent movie based on the novel The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas, père. The movie was directed by Fred Niblo and starred Douglas Fairbanks as D'Artagnan. The athletic Douglas Fairbanks's one-handed handspring to grab a sword during a fight scene in this film is considered as one of the great stunts of the early cinema period. It lasts nine frames.

It had a sequel, The Iron Mask.

The Three Musketeers (1993 film) (Wikipedia.org)

The Three Musketeers is a 1993 film version of the classic story from Walt Disney Pictures, directed by Stephen Herek and starring Charlie Sheen, Kiefer Sutherland, Chris O'Donnell and Oliver Platt.

The film is based on the novel The Three Musketeers (Les Trois Mousquetaires) by Alexandre Dumas, père. It recounts the adventures of d'Artagnan on his quest to join the three title characters in becoming a musketeer. However, this adaptation greatly simplifies and alters the story, and takes liberties with French history to the point of resembling an uchronia. For example, a plot by Cardinal Richelieu to assassinate the king and assume the throne would have never succeeded, given the social context and power structure operating in France at that time. Needless to say, no such plot line is even hinted at in Dumas' novel. On a more subtle note, it becomes clear in the novel (and in the more faithful film adaptations) that Cardinal Richelieu is far from being a complete villain. In fact, d'Artagnan takes on a position working for the Cardinal as the novel ends.

The Three Musketeers (1973 film) (Wikipedia.org)

The Three Musketeers is a 1973 film based on the novel by Alexandre Dumas, père. Directed by Richard Lester and written by George MacDonald Fraser (famous for his Flashman series of historical comic novels). The film was originally intended to run for three hours, but later the film was split in two (resulting in 1974's The Four Musketeers). The actors themselves were not informed that they were working on two films simultaneously, only Charlton Heston — handsomely paid for his handful of scenes — did not feel cheated by this duplicity. In 1989, the cast and crew returned to film The Return of the Musketeers, loosely based on Dumas' Twenty Years After.

The film adheres strongly to the novel, but it also injects a fair amount of humour. The films were shot by David Watkins, with an eye for period detail. The fight scenes were choreographed by master swordsman William Hobbs and turn the swashbuckling movies of the Forties and Fifties on their collective ear; these are more like brawls, with the combatants using knees, fists, furniture and even wet laundry as often as they do their swords.

The Three Musketeers (1933 serial) (Wikipedia.org)

The Three Musketeers is a 1933 serial film produced by Mascot Pictures which updates Dumas' The Three Musketeers by setting the story in contemporary North Africa. The Musketeers are soldiers in the French Foreign Legion, and D'Artagnan (renamed Lt. Tom Wayne and played by John Wayne), is a pilot in the United States military.
