The puppets were built in the 1950s - Ray Harryhausen's mother made the costumes and his father constructed the armatures.

Begun in 1952, the film was interrupted by other Ray Harryhausen projects and was not completed until 50 years later. Fortunately, most of the original models survived the long delay and were available for visual reference.
