The TV show-runner character of Gavin is based on writer/director John August.

The house where the Gary character stays and the Gavin character lives is John August's actual house.

SPOILER: John August was initially concerned with getting a believable performance out of a child actor, which is a large part of why Elle Fanning (I)'s character is portrayed as a mute girl. However, after being on set with her and realizing her acting abilities, he made it a point during re-shoots to include more dialogue for her in the final scene.

Melissa McCarthy's role was written specifically with her in mind.

Much of the content in the second part ("Reality Television") is heavily influenced by writer/director John August's experience working on the failed television series "D.C." (2000).

A large part of the second part ("Reality Television") was unscripted and scenes improvised by the actors.

The voice of the cameraman asking the questions in the second part ("Reality Television") is that of John August's.
