The Merry Widow is a 1925 American MGM romantic drama film and black comedy directed and written by Erich von Stroheim. The film stars Mae Murray, John Gilbert and Roy D'Arcy.
The film was symbolic in that it sparked the careers of many actors who would go on to be become superstars and icons - both Joan Crawford and Clark Gable had uncredited roles in the film, along with many others who would embark on successful acting careers.
Prince Danilo falls in love with dancer Sally O'Hara. His uncle, King Nikita I of Monteblanco forbids the marriage because she is a commoner. Thinking she has been jilted by her prince, Sally marries old, lecherous Baron Sadoja, whose wealth has kept the kingdom afloat. When he dies suddenly, Sally must be wooed all over again by Danilo. At one of these funerals she meets a reclusive grounds keeper who gives her clarity into her own pathos and self-destruction. The small kingdom of Marshovia has a little problem. The main tax-payer, the wealthy widow Sonia (who pays 52 0f the taxes) has left for Paris So Count Danilo is sent to Paris, to stop her from getting married by a stranger, so that the danger of removing the money is banned.
