Mask is a 1985 drama film directed by Peter Bogdanovich, and starring Cher and Eric Stoltz. Sam Elliott and Laura Dern are featured in supporting roles. Cher received the 1985 Cannes Film Festival award for Best Actress.
The film concerns the life and early death of Roy L. "Rocky" Dennis, a boy who suffered from craniodiaphyseal dysplasia, an extremely rare disorder known commonly as lionitis due to the disfiguring cranial enlargements that it causes.

The entire film was shot on Super 8mm, but much of the footage was lost in the development process. Due to time restrictions preventing a re-shoot, b-roll miniDV footage was substituted. The surviving Super 8mm footage is visible in the opening sequence.
The original film was shot in the basement of the house that Christopher R. Jones and Adam Phaneuf were living in at the time.

After already suffering the loss of the Super 8mm footage, Ferguson faced another setback as his computer crashed while editing the night before the film was to be sent out to be included on the band's album. The second half of the film was re-cut in time to be included.
