The Island is a 2005 science fiction film directed by Michael Bay and starring Ewan McGregor and Scarlett Johansson. It is described as a pastiche of "escape-from-dystopia" science fiction films produced in the late 1960s and 1970s such as Fahrenheit 451, THX 1138, Parts: The Clonus Horror, and Logan's Run. Set in 2019, the movie's plot revolves around the struggle of Ewan McGregor's character to fit into the highly structured world he lives in and the action-packed series of events that unfolds when he questions the truth about the world he lives in. The film, which cost $126 million to produce, earned only $36 million at the domestic box office, but went on to gross $127 million overseas, for a $163 million worldwide total.
The Island is a 1980 film. David Warner played the leader of a band of modern-day pirates who raid yachts and sailing boats in the Caribbean. Michael Caine played a journalist who, along with his son, is captured by them and learns how they have escaped detection for centuries.
The movie was based on the novel also called The Island by Peter Benchley, who also wrote the screenplay. Reviews were generally poor, and the film was not a box office success.
The United States Coast Guard cutter Dauntless stands in for the fictitious USCGC New Hope in the movie.

The Island tells the story of a future world where wealthy citizens have the option to have themselves cloned in order to insure they have a guaranteed matching source for organs, blood, or any other replacement body parts that may be needed. While this sounds like a great medical advancement in theory, the reality is the "insurance policies" of these affluent people are actual living, breathing, and feeling human beings who have to be murdered in order for the original person to have their replacement body part. The clones are deceived into believing they are being held away due to a worldwide contamination. The only other uncontaminated place is known as the Island, and periodically one or several of the clones will "win" a lottery ticket to go to this island. In actuality, they are being killed for their organs. When two of the clones escape and learn the truth of their situation, they attempt to free the others and tell everyone they can about the conspiracy while being hunted down by those in charge at the Utopian facility from which they came.
