The Human Stain (2000) is a novel by Philip Roth. It is set in late 1990s rural New England. Its first person narrator is 65-year-old author Nathan Zuckerman, a character in previous Roth novels The Ghost Writer (1979) and Zuckerman Unbound (1981); these two books form a loose trilogy with The Human Stain . Zuckerman acts as an observer rather than the protagonist of the novel.
