"The Garden" is a song by the hard rock group Guns N' Roses. It appears on the album Use Your Illusion I as track 11, and the compilation album Use Your Illusion as track 5. The song was written before the band released Appetite for Destruction, but was not included on that album. It was written by Axl Rose, Del James and West Arkeen.
Heavy metal pioneer Alice Cooper is featured in the song, along with the former lead singer of Blind Melon, Shannon Hoon.
The music video for the song depicts various band members in sections of New York City, specifically Times Square and Washington Square Park, and was released to promote the Use Your Illusion Tour. Due to various scenes taking place in strip clubs, the video was not shown very much on MTV. The video appears on the band's Welcome To The Videos.
Garden was J-Pop singer Sayaka's second single. It was released in 2003, over a year after her first single ever since. She wrote the lyrics and composed the music for the title track of this single. She also wrote the lyrics for the rest of the tracks on this single.
"Garden" is the ninth track off of Pearl Jam's debut album Ten. The song's lyrics were written by lead singer Eddie Vedder while the song's music was co-written by guitarist Stone Gossard and bassist Jeff Ament.
Stone Gossard on the song:
The 'garden of stone' referred to in the song is believed by some to mean a cemetery. With this in mind, the song's lyrics suggest an influence of William Blake's poem "The Garden of Love".
The song was played live from its debut in 1991 up until 1995 when it was dropped. The song returned to set lists for the band's 2000 tour before being dropped again. Most recently, the song was re-worked for the band's 2006 tour. The re-working consisted of placing the first chorus after the second verse and removing the soft intro, replacing it with the chorus guitar part. Live performances of "Garden" can be found on the "Dissident"/Live in Atlanta box set and the Live at the Gorge 05/06 box set.
