The Comeback is a television series produced by HBO that starred actress Lisa Kudrow as sitcom actress Valerie Cherish in modern-day Los Angeles, California. It was created by Kudrow and Michael Patrick King, a former executive producer of Sex and the City. Kudrow and King were also writers and executive producers of the series, with King also serving as the director of some episodes. The series premiered on HBO on June 5, 2005.
The show, a comedy, was shot by a single camera, in the style of reality television. Viewers of The Comeback are actually watching raw footage shot for the fictional reality show within The Comeback, also called The Comeback.
The series' episode titles (excluding the pilot) begin with the main character's first name Valerie... followed the theme of the episode, e.g. Valerie Triumphs at the Upfronts.
Despite a coveted time slot after the hit series Entourage, The Comeback debuted to low ratings and a mixed critical response: most praised the show, especially Kudrow's performance, which also earned her an Emmy nomination for Best Leading Actress, meanwhile others did not seem to enjoy it. HBO confirmed on September 21, 2005 that the series was officially cancelled after only being on the air for thirteen weeks. It has since been removed from HBO's online list of Original Series programming.
Scotty Malloy is a former NFL football player who travels around the world without a care. He decides to come back to Minneapolis to settle down and start a life for himself. He pays a visit to his ex-wife, and his son, Bo. Bo is in a very nice relationship with Jessica, a girl across the river he lives on. Jessica takes a liking to Scotty, and they begin a relationship behind Bo's back. This adds to the list of Scotty's irresponsibilities. Problems ensue, and it keeps Scotty from making his "comeback" in life. Written by Pat McCurry
lerie Cherish: *This* is my comeback. All right, let me take that again... So *this* is my come - Jane, I'm sorry, the, um, camera keeps moving in and out. ne: It's always going to be moving, just keep going. lerie Cherish: No, yeah, oh, I know, I know, it's just - I didn't know if I should wait for it to settle or... That's right. Yeah. Oh, right. Yeah. This one's always going to be moving, because that one is stationary. Got it. Okay. Here we go. *This* is my comeback! You know, I want to do another.
lerie Cherish: Well, this is it, this is my It-wall. Used to be bigger, but then I got married and you know, you have to share. So... Um, let me show you this. *This* here is my people's choice award, that I got for I'm It. And it means a lot to me because it's from the people. So... and right here is my Leno. There it is. ne: Talk more about that. lerie Cherish: What is there to say? There was a monkey on my head and he pooed! You know - it was a real water cooler moment, you know, the whole next day everyone was... you know. And you know, this was Leno's first year. So it was a real important show for him too! You know. It was quite an appearance. Classic!
lerie Cherish: Note to self: After a long day at work, I *don't* want to see that!
lerie Cherish: You see puppies, I see Korean barbeque!
lerie Cherish: Instead of the barbeque line I could say, "If I let you have the puppies I'll have to let weird old Mr. Schmidt have a *SATAN* flag!" See, that's good, because EVERYBODY hates Satan!
