The Charge of the Light Brigade is a British film made in 1968 by Woodfall Film Productions and distributed by United Artists. It was directed by Tony Richardson and produced by Neil Hartley from a screenplay by Charles Wood and John Osborne (uncredited). The music score was by John Addison and the cinematography by David Watkin.
The film starred Trevor Howard as Lord Cardigan, John Gielgud as Lord Raglan, and Vanessa Redgrave, Harry Andrews, Jill Bennett, David Hemmings, Ben Aris, Peter Bowles, Helen Cherry, Howard Marion-Crawford, T.P. McKenna and Donald Wolfit. The film paints the aristocratic officers as incompetents who were concerned with appearance over substance, and who disdained doing the real work of training and leading their troops.
It was nominated for 6 BAFTA Film Awards but did not win in any category. It is also noted for periodic, brief animated segments by Richard Williams that explain the global situation in an amusing but clear way (using, for example, a bear to represent Russia and a lion to represent the United Kingdom).
The Charge of the Light Brigade is a 1936 historical film made by Warner Bros. It was directed by Michael Curtiz and produced by Samuel Bischoff, with Hal B. Wallis as executive producer, from a screenplay by Michael Jacoby and Rowland Leigh, from a story by Michael Jacoby based on the poem The Charge of the Light Brigade by Alfred Lord Tennyson. The music score was by Max Steiner and the cinematography by Sol Polito.
The film starred Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland. The story is very loosely based on the famous Charge of the Light Brigade that took place during the Crimean War (1853-56).
"The fun in this view is spontaneous. The camera had been taking a picture of a crowd of boys snow-balling on one side of the side streets in Boston when a grocer's wagon drove into the scene. The boys thereupon turned their attention to the driver; and his efforts to escape the fusilade are very amusing." Written by AMB Picture Catalogue
A chronicle of events that led to the British involvement in the Crimean War against Russia and which led to the siege of Sevastopol and the fierce Battle of Balaclava on October 25, 1854 which climaxed with the heroic, but near-disastrous calvary charge made by the British Light Brigade against a Russian artillery battery in a small valley which resulted in the near-destruction of the brigade due to error of judgement and rash planning on part by the inept British commanders.
