The Care Bears Battle the Freeze Machine is the second television special to feature the Care Bears characters. Made by Atkinson Film-Arts of Canada, it premiered in syndication in April 1984.
The special, a follow-up to the previous installment The Land Without Feelings (from 1983), sees the return of the ten original Bears and the rarely-seen Cloud Keeper, as well as villain Professor Coldheart. In addition, the special introduces Baby Hugs, Baby Tugs, Grams Bear, and Professor Coldheart's sidekick, Frostbite.
A tie-in book based on the special (ISBN 0-910313-15-6) was written by Arthur S. Rosenblatt, illustrated by Joe Ewers and published by Parker Brothers as a part of the Tales from the Care Bears series.
The special won an award for Best Children's Program at the 13th National ACTRA Awards (in 1984). list.html" target="_blank">http://www.crawleyfilms.ca/awards/awrd_list.html
Video copies of The Freeze Machine have been out of print since the end of the 1980s. However, it was released for the first time on DVD, as a special feature on the March 20, 2007 re-issue of _The Care Bears Movie. However, it is not the original broadcast version. Instead, it is the version that was seen as part of the later syndicated package of the DIC and Nelvana TV series (which was also seen on the Disney Channel and Toon Disney).
Introduces three Care Bear characters Baby Hugs, Baby Tugs and Grams Bear.
The second and last Care Bears special to be produced by now-defunct Canadian company, Atkinson Film-Arts. Since American Greetings and Kenner Toys were not satisfied with Atkinson's work, production of future animated installments was soon transferred to DiC Entertainment and (more famously) another Canadian studio, Nelvana.
