The Black Dahlia is an Academy Award-nominated 2006 film directed by Brian De Palma. It is based on the novel of the same name by James Ellroy, which was based on the murder of Elizabeth Short. The Black Dahlia had its world premiere as the opening film at the 63rd Venice Film Festival on August 30th. The film's wide release was on 15 September 2006.

Three copycat killers in Los Angeles go on a killing spree fashioned after the Black Dahlia killing of 1947. After luring female actresses into their warehouse for a movie audition, the trio kills them, leaving their dismembered bodies around LA. Attempts to stop them are made by the local police, especially one rookie who is determined to get to the bottom of this killing spree, as well as the initial murder of Elizabeth Short that happened 60 years prior.
