Based on the long-running CBS TV sitcom, The Beverly Hillbillies, a poor hillbilly named Jed Clampett (played by Jim Varney) goes hunting on his land one day and becomes a billionaire when he misses an animal with his rifle and the bullet hits the ground, sending up a bubbling geyser of crude oil.
Diedrich Bader later made a reference to his role in the film in an episode of The Drew Carey Show.
Jed Clampett and kin move from Arkansas to Beverly Hills when he becomes a billionaire, after an oil strike. The country folk are very naive with regard to life in the big city, so when Jed starts a search for a new wife there are inevitably plenty of takers and con artists ready to make a fast buck. Meet the Clampett clan - There's Jed, a kind and sensible man turned millionaire, though not as imbocilic as the others, things happen around him without he knowing it; Granny - old and senile, paranoid, and always certain she knows how to deal with a situation; Elly May - Incredibly beautiful but awful naive! And Jethro Bodine - the stupid nephew of Jed. He's a strong as he is dumb; and Mr. Drysdale, a greedy banker who will do anything to keep the Clampett money in his bank, even if he has to hurt other people. Anyway, they've struck oil, gotten millions of dollars, move into a giant mansion, but still live like hillbillies: they still dress in tattered ragged clothes with rope belts, and Granny still makes soap the old fashion way, and Jethro tries to woo the women with his manly ways, but he's actually only acting like a real idiot, and doesn't even realize it. The Clampetts were simple folk: living off the land, they wanted nothing and asked for nothing. When Jed Clampett accidentally discovered oil on his property, he and his family were instant millionaires. Deciding to move to Beverly Hills to take advantage of their new-found wealth, the Clampetts find that their down-to-earth lifestyle clashes with the new suburb and its shielded, upper-class inhabitants.
