The Age of Innocence is an Academy Award-winning film released in 1993 by Columbia Pictures, directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Michelle Pfeiffer and Winona Ryder. It is a film adaptation of the book of the same name by Edith Wharton. The film's tagline is: "In a world of tradition. In an age of innocence. They dared to break the rules."
Henry Buchanan (David Warner), an English schoolmaster, comes to teach in a small Canadian town. His outspoken views on the evil of the approaching World War II causes a ripple in the small town, and when it is discovered that he was a conscientious objector in World War I, the citizens of the town are outraged. But it's his friendships with both the enigmatic rich recluse Mrs Boswell (Honor Blackman) and Clarissa (Trudy Young), the daughter of the town's most prominent citizen, that will get Henry into the most trouble of all... Society scion Newland Archer is engaged to May Welland, but his well-ordered life is upset when he meets May's unconventional cousin, the Countess Olenska. At first, Newland becomes a defender of the Countess, whose separation from her abusive husband makes her a social outcast in the restrictive high society of late-19th Century New York, but he finds in her a companion spirit and they fall in love.
