The 39 Steps is a 1935 film directed by Alfred Hitchcock, based on the adventure novel The Thirty-nine Steps by John Buchan. The film stars Robert Donat and Madeleine Carroll.
There have been three major film versions of the book. Hitchcock's original has been the most acclaimed, and remains so today: In 1999 it came 4th in a BFI poll of British films, while in 2004 Total Film named it the 21st greatest British movie of all time.
The 39 Steps is a 1959 thriller directed by Ralph Thomas, starring Kenneth More and Taina Elg, based on the novel The Thirty-Nine Steps by John Buchan.
It was the first colour version of the popular tale, and has much higher production values than the previous 1935 Hitchcock version, though several large setpieces (such as Hannay's escape from the train on the Forth Rail Bridge and the music hall finale) and much of the original dialogue are taken from the original film.
Richard Hannay is native South African, born in Britain, and returning on a short visit when his neighbor tells him of a plot to murder a visiting foreign minister. The setting is before the onset of World War I. Hannay meets some individuals with connections to the British government, and tells them of the plot, now quite credible to Richard since his neighbor has met his demise in his own quarters. The South African is on the lamb because he is the next to be the victim of the sinister forces that are attempting to destabilize the British government and the uneasy peace that exists in Europe. In the end, does Richard Hannay saves the western world? Written by Paul Michael Moyer
