Tell Me Why (The Beatles song) (Wikipedia.org)

"Tell Me Why" is a song by The Beatles from their album A Hard Day's Night In the US it would also be on the album Something New. Credited to Lennon & McCartney, it was written by John Lennon in either Paris or New York , it was completed in only eight takes on Thursday, 27 February 1964, at Abbey Road Studios, London.

Paul McCartney has said: Lennon described the song as resembling "a black New York girl-group song". Its basic structure of simple doo-wop chord changes and block harmonies over a walking bass line “creates an illusion of sincerity through its sheer attack”.

Tell Me Why (1956 song) (Wikipedia.org)

"Tell Me Why" is a popular song, written by Titus Turner in 1956. It is a slow but strong rhythm and blues ballad, and has a melody reminiscent of "Just a Closer Walk With Thee".

The first hit version was by Marie Knight, a black R&B singer, on the Mercury Wing label. It was a local hit in the New Orleans and Texas areas. When it attracted attention, it went on to become a moderate hit for Gale Storm and The Crew-Cuts in 1956 and later for Elvis Presley in 1966. Elvis had in fact recorded it in 1957, but it was not released then.

The Marie Knight rendition is listed as the original version of Elvis' hit.

Tell Me Why (Spice Girls song) (Wikipedia.org)

"Tell Me Why" was listed as the second single (throughout Europe) to be lifted from Spice Girls' album Forever. However due to poor sales of Forever, the single was later cancelled. Promotional singles had already been circulating throughout Europe, Australia and other countries. Even though the single was canceled in the end, it fared well and became a club hit. Melanie C didn't co-write this song as she was busy with recording and promoting her own solo album at the time

The song was released as a radio single in the Philippines to promote the album. It managed to clinch the number two spot, solely on votes and requests.

The lyrics are a bitter response to the other side of a broken relationship, although it may or may not be a romantic one. Due to the vaguity of the pronouns may in fact be about the departure of group member Geri Halliwell: "We started with dreams/We started a team/But you weren't as true as you always seemed/You promised to love/No matter what/Yet you turned your back and walked out on me."

A Jonathan Peters Edit of this song is being given as an iTunes bonus track along with the sale of the Spice Girls new Greatest Hits album.

Tell Me Why (Will Smith song) (Wikipedia.org)

Tell Me Why, is a hip-hop genre song from Will Smith's 2005 album 'Lost & Found'. The song features grammy winning R&B singer Mary J Blige. It focuses primarily on the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center, but then goes on to focus on other ills in society such as the Catholic Priest sexual abuse Scandal. It also mentions the deaths of many black heroes including Martin Luther King Jr. The song has only one curse word, which is bleeped out. Its positive lyrics include;

"Mmmmm, souls are captured/Dreams are stolen, hearts are broken/Evil blatantly rewarded/Hate surrenders, Love exalted/Hope elated, negativity is shorted" "Please what am I supposed to say to my kids when they say 'Why?'"

Originally, this track was to be Will's second single but producers were already working with Party Starter as the next single. Tye Tribbett and G.A. are featured as the choir in the chorus.

Tell Me Why (Declan Galbraith song) (Wikipedia.org)

Tell Me Why is a single by singer Declan Galbraith.

Tell Me Why (Eurovision song) (Wikipedia.org)

Tell Me Why was the Romanian entry in the Eurovision Song Contest 2002, performed in English by Monica Anghel and Marcel Pavel. This was the first Romanian entry not to be recorded in Romanian.

The song is a ballad, with the singers mourning the end of their relationship. They ask each other why it needs to end and wonder if the love was "only a foolish lie".

With her appearance at the Contest, Anghel achieved an unusual distinction. She had previously attempted to represent Romania at the 1996 Contest with Rugă Pentru Pacea Lumii, but had been unable to enter the main Contest due to the rules in place at the time. She thus became the only artist (as of 2007) to have failed to appear at the main Contest in 1996 to make an appearance later.

The song was performed twenty-first on the night (following Malta's Ira Losco with 7th Wonder and preceding Slovenia's Sestre with Samo Ljubezen). At the close of voting, it had received 71 points, placing 9th in a field of 24.

It was succeeded as Romanian representative at the 2003 Contest (the first time that Romania was not forced to skip a year's participation) by Nicola with Don't Break My Heart.

Tell Me Why (Genesis song) (Wikipedia.org)

"Tell Me Why" is a rock song by Genesis. It first appeared as the seventh track on their 1991 album We Can't Dance, and was later issued as a single in Europe (in November 1992) and Britain (in February 1993).

A royalty from the single was donated to the Bosnian Save the Children and Red Cross charities. This was in keeping with the lyric of the song, which expressed disdain for hypocrisy about food and shelter ("You say there's nothing you can do / Is there one rule for them and one for you?").

Much like fellow album track "Way of the World", the discontentment of the words is juxtaposed with buoyant, almost Byrdsian guitar playing from Mike Rutherford. Singer Phil Collins addressed similar concerns about homelessness in "Another Day in Paradise" (1989).

Reflecting the emerging trend for CD singles, "Tell Me Why" was issued as two separate discs in the UK. Both editions came in digipaks with identical artwork, and were backed by a live version of "Dreaming While You Sleep". The first CD featured a 1992 version of "Turn It On Again" as an exclusive track, while the second included a full performance of "Tonight, Tonight, Tonight" from 1986 (this song segued into "Invisible Touch" on the We Can't Dance tour).

In Europe the live B-sides were "Mama", "The Brazilian" (both from the Invisible Touch tour) and the single version of "Invisible Touch".

Keyboardist Tony Banks regarded the song as worthy of single release (much like "Anything She Does" five years before), so its release as the fifth single can be seen as belated. Unlike its four predecessors, however, it was not a commercial success, barely breaching the UK Top 40.

"Tell Me Why" was the last Genesis single featuring Phil Collins on vocals.
