Surf II (full title: Surf II: The End of the Trilogy) is a 1984 comedy film written and directed by Randall M. Badat. Despite what the title implies, there was no "Surf I". For a while, the film was advertised with the title "Surf II: The Nerds Strike Back" in an attempt to cash in on the success of Revenge of the Nerds that same year. It was filmed in parts of Redondo Beach, Hermosa Beach, and Santa Cruz.
Written as a campy send-up of 1950s beach party films and 1970s monster movies, the plot of 'Surf II' follows the maniacal nerd Menlo Schwartzer (Deezen) who plans to rid the world's beaches of his biggest enemies: surfers. With the reluctant help of his beautiful girlfriend Sparkle (Kerridge), Menlo concocts a chemical potion that can turn people into mutated, garbage-eating zombies and markets it to the surfers under the name 'Buzz Cola'. After several surfers fall victim to the perils of Buzz Cola, two teenage surfers, along with the help of their girlfriends and eccentric science teacher (Isacksen) are determined to bring Menlo's reign of terror to an end and still have time to compete in the big surfing contest.
Reviews of the film were ultimately negative. Leonard Maltin gave the film 1 1/2 stars, claiming "it's only best joke is in the title", while Videohound called it "an exercise in mental melt-down". Regardless, the film has managed to find a small cult following on video.
Surf II has yet to be released on DVD, possibly due to rights over the soundtrack. VHS tapes have sold on eBay for prices upwards of $30.
