Sunday is the day of the week between Saturday and Monday. In the Judaeo-Christian tradition it is the first day of the week, but from mid-20th century it is often counted as the seventh day of the week. Sunday is named after Sunne (Sól), Germanic goddess of the sun, from which the word sun is also derived. The practice of naming the seven days after the then known "planets" goes back to Babylonian or Egyptian times and was adopted by Greeks and Romans.
Sunday is considered a holiday in many countries of the world and as part of the weekend. Predominantly countries influenced by Islamic (or Jewish) culture often have Friday (or Saturday) as a weekly holiday instead.
The Gregorian calendar repeats every 400 years, and no century starts on a Sunday. The Jewish New Year never falls on a Sunday. Any month beginning on a Sunday will contain a Friday the 13th.
In the folk rhyme Monday's Child, "... the child that is born on the Sabbath Day is bonny and blithe and good and gay."
In Thailand, the color associated with Sunday is red.
Sunday Oliseh (born April 14, 1974 in Abavo, Delta State) is a former Nigerian footballer. He played 63 international matches and scored 4 goals for Nigeria, and played at the Football World Cups of 1994 and 1998. Oliseh also participated in the Olympic gold medal winning team of 1996.
A midfielder, Oliseh played for well known clubs such as Ajax, Borussia Dortmund and Juventus.
He is most fondly remembered for scoring the winning goal in the 3rd group match against Spain in the France 1998 World Cup that put Nigeria at the top of the group and knocked highly favoured Spain out of the World Cup. A throw-in deep in the Spanish half got deflected by a defender. Oliseh ran and fired an explosive shot from midway between the half line and the 18-yard box and took Spanish goalkeeper Andoni Zubizarreta completely by surprise and it went into the net.
In January 2006, at the age of 31, Oliseh retired from professional football after playing a half season for Belgian top club Racing Genk.
His younger brothers, Azubuike and Egutu are also professional footballers.
