Stagecoach is a 1939 western film directed by John Ford, starring Claire Trevor and John Wayne in his breakthrough role. The screenplay, written by Dudley Nichols and Ben Hecht, is an adaptation of The Stage to Lordsburg, a 1937 short story by Ernest Haycox. The film sees a group of strangers riding on a stagecoach to the town of "Lordsburg" through dangerous Apache territory.
Although Ford had made many silent films in the Western genre prior to Stagecoach, this was his first using sound. It was also the first of many films which Ford made on location in Monument Valley, in the American southwest on the Arizona - Utah border, many of which starred John Wayne.
Stagecoach is a 1966 remake of the 1939 John Ford western Stagecoach. Slim Pickens replaced Andy Devine as the driver, football player Alex Cord filled in for John Wayne as the Ringo Kid, and Bing Crosby played Thomas Mitchell's part as the drunken doctor (Crosby turned down another role played earlier by Mitchell, Detective Columbo, two years later). The 1966 version was directed by Gordon Douglas.
A group of unlikely traveling companions find themselves on the same stagecoach to Cheyenne. They include a drunken doctor, a bar girl who's been thrown out of town, a professional gambler, a traveling liquor salesman, a banker who has decided to embezzle money, a gunslinger out for revenge and a young woman going to join her army captain husband. All have secrets but when they are set upon by an Indian war party and then a family of outlaws, they find they must all work together if they are to stay alive. Written by garykmcd
Remake of the classic John Ford movie which originally starred John Wayne is not quite as illustrious as the first film. Devised as a starrer for country music stars, the film has been modified to give the stars their screen time. Story follows a stagecoach ride through Old West Apache territory. On board are a cavalry man's pregnant wife (Mary Crosby), a prostitute with a broken heart (Elizabeth Ashley), a Marshal (Johnny Cash) taking in his prisoner Johnny Ringo (Kris Kristofferson), a crooked gambler (Waylon Jennings), and the infamous Doc Holliday (Willie Nelson).
