Squidbillies is an animated television series produced by Williams Street Studios for the Adult Swim programming block of Cartoon Network. The animation is done by Radical Axis, with background design by Ben Prisk. It was created and is written by Dave Willis of Aqua Teen Hunger Force fame, and Jim Fortier, with whom he'd previously worked on Space Ghost Coast to Coast. The show revolves around a family of anthropomorphic hillbilly squids—The Cuyler family—that live in the north Georgia mountains in poverty.
The series has been renewed for a third season of 20 episodes, which began airing and being uploaded to iTunes on January 20 2008.
This show was heavily promoted on The Cartoon Network for months and was set to premiere on 7 November 2004. That night, the network announced the premiere of the show. But instead of the pilot, the network aired the pilot for "Perfect Hair Forever" (2004). Following that was a "special presentation" hosted by Space Ghost of "Space Ghost Coast to Coast" (1994) in which a panel discussed "Perfect Hair Forever". The panel included Meatwad of "Aqua Teen Hunger Force" (2000), Sharko of "Sealab 2021" (2000) and Earlie Cuyler of "Squidbillies". Viewers thought that it had all been an elaborate prank by The Cartoon Network and that "Squidbillies" did not really exist. But it was later reported that the script had gone through numerous rewrites throughout 2004 and the writers became unsure about the pilot. Just a few weeks before the premiere date, the pilot was scrapped. The "talk show" segment was hastily put together just days before the premiere date to fill out the time slot. The show was retooled and finally premiered in 2005.
Clips of a rough cut of the pilot aired on 1 April 2005 during Adult Swim's bumps.
Several minutes of teaser footage were created to premiere the 2004 San Diego Comicon in San Diego and the 2004 Dragon Con in Atlanta. The initial reaction was mixed, with most people unsure of what to make of the show.
