South China Mall ( ) in Dongguan, China is the largest mall in the world. It has leasable space for over 1,500 stores in approximately 6.5 million square-feet (600,000 square metres) of total floor area.
This mall has seven zones modeled on these international cities, nations and regions: Amsterdam, Paris, Rome, Venice, Egypt, the Caribbean, and California.
Although the mall opened in 2005, it still suffers from lack of retailers. Much of the retail space remains empty. Many analysts say that the main reason the mall isn't picking the pace, as of yet, is that it is located in the suburbs of Dongguan, which means that it is only practical to travel there using a car. For now, Chinese shoppers still prefer downtown shopping areas to suburban malls.
