Sometimes A Great Notion was a 1971 film, starring Paul Newman and Henry Fonda, and featuring Richard Jaeckel in his Oscar nominated role. The film was also known as Never Give A Inch. The film is based on the novel of the same name, Sometimes a Great Notion by Ken Kesey.
The fictional setting of Wakonda, Oregon was filmed at various locations on the Oregon Coast, including Kernville and Newport. Several of the Newport scenes were filmed in Mo's Shanty Fish House. http://ftp.wi.net/~census/lesson36.html
Hank Stamper (Paul Newman) and his father, Henry Stamper (Henry Fonda) own and operate the family business by cutting and shipping logs in Oregon. The town is furious when they continue working despite the town going broke and the other loggers go on strike ordering the Stampers to stop, however Hank continues to push his family on cutting more trees. Hank's wife (Lee Remick) wishes he would stop and hopes that they can spend more time together.
