Sole, real name Tim Holland, is an alternative hip hop artist and a co-founder of the anticon. collective. Sole is known for his dense, often dark stream-of-consciousness writing style and his extremely fast, unorthodox delivery. Perhaps most controversially, he sometimes forgoes rhyming altogether. His verses are often filled with abstraction, metaphor and sarcasm while avoiding or deconstructing traditional hip hop topics. Described as "Jack Kerouac meets Ice Cube meets David Koresh" (The Wire), his albums and record label have been featured in magazines such as Playboy and The Wire. Sole is also a producer and releases his self-produced experiments under the alias mansbestfriend, taken from the name of his Apple G4 computer.
Sole has recently finished a new album with acclaimed Florida trio Skyrider (Sole and The Skyrider Band) and has also released his latest mansbestfriend work, a self-produced instrumental album entitled POLI-SCI.187. He has also stated that his future albums released under the moniker mansbestfriend will be instrumentals as well.
