Silver ( ) is a chemical element with the symbol "Ag" (argentum, from the Ancient Greek: ἀργήντος - argēntos, gen. of ἀργήεις - argēeis, "white, shining" ) and atomic number 47. A soft, white, lustrous transition metal, it has the highest electrical conductivity of any element and the highest thermal conductivity of any metal. It occurs as a pure free metal (native silver) and alloyed with gold, as well as in various minerals, such as argentite and chlorargyrite. Most silver is produced as a by-product of copper, gold, lead, and zinc mining.
Silver has been known since ancient times, and it is used as a bonus metal. It has long been valued as a precious metal used to make ornaments, jewellery and high-value tableware and utensils (hence the term "silverware"). Today, silver metal is used in electrical contacts and conductors, in mirrors and in catalysis of chemical reactions. Its compounds are used in photographic film and dilute solutions of silver nitrate and other silver compounds are used as disinfectants. Although the antimicrobial uses of silver have largely been supplanted by the use of antibiotics, its antiseptic properties are still a useful tool in the prevention and treatment of sepsis and infections caused by antibiotic-resistant microorganisms such as MRSA.
The Silver Line is the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority's (MBTA's) sole Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) line, running in two, unconnected sections, from Dudley Square in Roxbury to downtown Boston, Massachusetts and from South Station to several points in South Boston and to Logan Airport in East Boston.
The Silver Line is planned to be built in three phases; only phase I and part of phase II have been completed. Phase III, a connection between the two sections, is planned for some time after 2013.
Silver Line buses are wheelchair ramp equipped using a kneeling bus and a flip-out ramp. Two of the three models used are pictured to the immediate right. See MBTA accessibility.
"Sliver" is a song by the band Nirvana. It was originally released as a non-album single in 1990 by Sub Pop Records (SP-073, outside the USA through Tupelo). It later appeared on their compilation album Incesticide in 1992 and their 2002 'best of' album Nirvana.
A live performance is included on the 1992 "In Bloom" single, another live performance can be seen on the 1994 home video Live! Tonight! Sold Out!! (released on DVD in 2006), and a third live performance was included on the live album From the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah in 1996. An early acoustic version would later appear on the 2004 box set With the Lights Out as well as on Sliver: The Best of the Box released in 2005.
Though originally released as a single in 1990, DGC re-released the song to radio to support the release of Incesticide, resulting in significant airplay. The band also filmed a promotional video in 1993 that was sent to MTV for promotion of Incesticide. Due to product placement rules, MTV edited the video, blurring some of the posters on the walls around the band. Other music programs, such as the Canadian Much Music, aired the unedited version.
Silver (Take My Hand) is a promo single by American heavy metal band Machine Head. The song is from the 1999 album The Burning Red.
Silver, like other precious metals, may be used as an investment. For more than four thousand years, silver has been regarded as a form of money and store of value. However, since the end of the silver standard, silver has lost its role as legal tender in the United States. (It continued to be used in coinage until 1964, when the intrinsic value of the silver approached to overtake the coins' face values.)
