Significant Others was a half-hour, improvised American sitcom that aired for two seasons in 2004. Following four couples from various backgrounds in and out of therapy, it focused on issues of adultery, parenthood, impending parenthood, and the chore of behaving like an adult. Adopting the tone of many British comedies, it was almost entirely ad-libbed, without a laugh track, and put the viewer in the position of therapist, as the couples addressed the camera directly during the therapy sessions featured during each episode.
Produced by NBC, it was distributed by Bravo, the cable network on which it aired until its last episode on December 19, 2004. While it primarily flew under the radar during its short run, it was heralded by many critics for its originality, dark humor, and fresh take on the pains of wedded "bliss." Its entire two-season, twelve episode run was released on DVD by Shout Factory on February 14, 2006.
Significant Others was a short-lived dramatic television series starring Jennifer Garner. Other stars included Michael Weatherly, Scott Bairstow and Eion Bailey. It aired on the Fox Network in the United States from 11 March 1998 to 25 March 1998. Only three episodes were shown before cancellation, although six episodes were produced. The entire series, including the unaired episodes, was released on DVD in 2004 after Jennifer Garner had gained fame on the TV series Alias. The DVD cover highlighted Garner's name and was labeled as "From the studio that brought you 13 Going on 30" (a film which starred Garner).
"Significant Others" is an improvised comedy about couples in and out of marriage counseling, taking a hysterically honest look at marriage and the rewards - and costs - that come with being in a committed relationship. More real than traditional comedies and more imaginative than reality shows, this six-episode series features a talented ensemble of actors and comedians who, quite literally, script themselves. Written by JJ
Jennifer Garner's second TV pilot, the first not having been picked up.
FOX canceled the show after three episodes due to low ratings.
