Sandy Olsson is a fictional character in the film Grease, a film adaptation of the stage musical of the same name. In the film, she is played by Olivia Newton-John.
Her origins are markedly different from those of the character of the stage musical upon which she is based, whose last name is given as Dumbrowski. In the film, Sandy comes from Australia and appears to be only temporarily resident in the U.S., while the character in the stage musical was an American citizen of Polish extraction. Sandy first meets Danny Zuko at the beach where she tells him that she must return to Australia. However her family's plans change and she attends Rydell High School as a foreign exchange student.
In one scene, she sings the song "Hopelessly Devoted to You". In the end, a greatly changed Sandy and Danny fly away from the carnival at Rydell High in his racing car, turning the film into a fantasy.
She does not appear in the film Grease 2 but is mentioned by Frenchy when she meets Sandy's cousin Michael Carrington (portrayed by Maxwell Caulfield). Michael's response indicates that Sandy is back in Australia.
