Ruta Lee (born Ruta Mary Kilmonis on May 30 1936, in Montreal, Canada) is a Canadian-born actress and dancer, of Lithuanian extraction, who appeared as one of the brides in the film Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.
She is also best known for a being a "regular" on a number of game shows, including Hollywood Squares, What's My Line?, and as Alex Trebek's co-host on High Rollers.
In the late 1960s, Lee appeared on The Lucy Show starring Lucille Ball, playing a substitute secretary to Mr. Mooney (played by Gail Gordon) when Lucy Carmichael is supposed to go on vacation. On another episode, when Lucy becomes a temporary secretary to Milton Berle for the weekend, Ruta Lee appears as herself. In a memorable scene from this episode, Lucy opens the door when the doorbell rings, gets a shock when she sees the famous Ruta Lee, and slams the door in her face. Later, Berle gets a salad dumped on his head when Lucy thinks he is having an affair with Ruta Lee. It is said to be among the funniest of The Lucy Show episodes.
Lee played the female lead character in the comedy/western film Sargeants 3 (1962) opposite Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr. and Peter Lawford.
Lee also appeared in the movies Funny Face and Witness for the Prosecution, as well as appearing on numerous television shows such as Three's Company, United States Marshal, Hogan's Heroes, Maverick, The Twilight Zone, Roseanne, The Andy Griffith Show, and Gunsmoke.
Ruta Lee is also known as a tireless defender of human rights. When Soviet leader Khrushchev was on a visit to the United States, Ruta burst through a crowd, approached the leader, and demanded that her Grandmother be allowed to leave Soviet occupied Lithuania, and be free to come to the United States. Lee's Grandmother had been deported by cattle-train to Siberia, along with thousands of other Lithuanians, in the early years following the Second World War. Ruta Lee received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in October 2006 from the late Johnny Grant. Her friend Debbie Reynolds was in attendance. Her star was placed outside Graumann's Chinese Theater because she worked in the ticket booth there just after graduating Hollywood High School a few blocks away.
