Roger Williams (theologian) (Wikipedia.org)

Roger Williams (December 21, 1603-April 1, 1683) was an English theologian, a notable proponent of religious toleration and the separation of church and state (because he was worried about contamination of the church), and an advocate for fair dealings with Native Americans. In 1644, he received a charter creating the colony of Rhode Island, named for the principal island in Narragansett Bay. He is credited for originating either the first or second Baptist church established in America.

Roger Williams (pianist) (Wikipedia.org)

Roger Williams (born October 1, 1924) is one of the most popular pianists in American popular music history. As of 2004, he has released 116 albums. blank">Roger Williams's biography at mrpianotoday.com, fetched September 20, 2007

He was born Louis Weertz, the son of a Lutheran minister (Rev. Frederick J. Weertz) and a music teacher (Dorothea Bang Weertz), in _Omaha, Nebraska, but before his first birthday moved to Des Moines, Iowa. He first played the piano at age three, but in high school became interested in boxing, mainly at his father's insistence, and only returned to music after breaking his nose several times and sustaining several other injuries. He majored in piano at Drake University in Des Moines, but was expelled for playing "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" in the practice room. Weertz entered the United States Navy, served in World War II, and while still in the Navy received a bachelor's degree from Idaho State College (now Idaho State University) in 1950. Afterwards he managed to re-enroll at Drake, where he earned his master's degree, and later moved to New York City to study at the Juilliard School of Music. At Juilliard he studied jazz piano under Lennie Tristano and Teddy Wilson.

One night he was scheduled to play as an accompanist for a Juilliard student who was scheduled to sing on "Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts." The singer failed to appear, and Louis Weertz went on as a piano soloist, winning the night's contest. He was heard by David Kapp, founder of Kapp Records, and Kapp was so impressed that he signed the pianist, changing his name to "Roger Williams" after the founder of Rhode Island. In addition to the Godfrey program, he also won a talent contest on Dennis James' program, "Chance of a Lifetime." In 1955 he recorded the only piano instrumental to reach #1 on Billboard magazine's popular music charts: "Autumn Leaves." While many other records of this song have been made since it was composed in 1945 by the composer Joseph Kosma, Roger Williams' version is easily the best known and most played. In 1966 he had another Top Ten hit with the song Born Free from the motion picture soundtrack of the same name.

His first wife, Joy Dunsmoor, bore him three children. After divorcing her he married again, in 1985, to Louise DiCarlo.

He was the first pianist to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. On October 29, 2004 he was inducted into the Nebraska Music Hall of Fame.

Williams resides in Encino, California and has more recently bought the rights to his Kapp masters from the Universal Music Group.

His Steinway & Sons "Gold Steinway" grand piano has been on tour for public display and entertainment during 2007 - 2008.

Roger Williams (US politician) (Wikipedia.org)

John Roger Williams (born ca. 1950) is the former secretary of state for the U.S. state of Texas, having served from November 2004 until his resignation effective July 1, 2007. Williams announced on June 11 that he would leave the appointed position to "pursue other opportunities". On July 16, Williams was named chairman of the Texas Republican Victory 2008 Coordinated Campaign, which assists candidates up and down the general election ballot.

Governor Rick Perry nominated his own deputy chief of staff, Phil Wilson, a native of Brownwood, to succeed Williams. Wilson's selection met the tentative approval of Democratic State Senator Kirk Watson, in whose Travis County district Wilson (born ca. 1968) resides. According to Watson, Wilson assured him that he will take no position as the presumptive secretary of state on the GOP-favored idea of asking voters to present photo identification or other proof of identity before voting. The appointment must be confirmed by two-thirds of state senators present and voting.

Williams was the fourth secretary of state to have served under the appointment of Perry. The others were now U.S. Representative Henry Cuellar of Laredo (January - October 2001), Gwen Shea (2002-2003), a former member of the Texas House of Representatives from Irving in Dallas County, and Geoffrey Connor (2003-2004), a native of Runnels County in central Texas.

Williams was reared in Fort Worth. He was a star baseball player for Texas Christian University from 1968-1971 and attempted to play professionally with the Atlanta Braves farm team. He returned to Texas to coach TCU's baseball team before he embarked on a career in business and public affairs. Williams joined his father in a family automobile dealership founded in 1939.

He is a trustee of TCU and the George Bush School of Government and Public Service at Texas A&M University in College Station. Williams was appointed by Governor Perry to the Texas Motor Vehicle Board and by former Lieutenant Governor Bill Ratliff to the Special Committee on State Employee Compensation and Benefits.

As secretary of state, Williams served as Chief Election Officer for Texas, assisted county election officials and ensured the uniform application and interpretation of election laws through the state. He oversaw the state’s efforts to comply with the federal Help America Vote Act.

Williams worked to promote economic development, investment, and job creation in Texas. He was also Perry's chief liaison to Mexico and the Border Region of Texas. In this capacity, he worked with Mexican federal, state, and local officials on common issues.

As the overseer and director of Texas elections, Williams's office was in the spotlight during the 2006 Texas governor's race. Independent candidate Richard Friedman (commonly known as "Kinky") successfully lobbied to have the name "Kinky" placed on the election ballot. Another Independent candidate, Carole K. Strayhorn, sought to have the name "Grandma" placed on the ballot next to her name. (Strayhorn's campaign slogan was "one tough grandma".) Strayhorn's request was denied. Friedman and Strayhorn finished third and fourth, respectively, in the election, behind Democrat Chris Bell and the winner, incumbent Republican Perry.

Williams and his wife, Patty, live in Weatherford, the seat of Parker County west of Fort Worth, and have two daughters who were attending TCU in 2007. He owns an automobile dealership in Weatherford.
